Jamaica Empress Joins WCPL as Fourth Team for 2026 Season
The Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) is due for a significant expansion in 2026, and Jamaica Empress has now officially brought on board as the fourth franchise of this tournament. It’s nerve wracking because it represents a new and proud step for women’s cricket in the Caribbean, but is also expected to bring about an all-time level of competition within the tournament.
The WCPL 2026 will be held from September 5 to September 17 in Barbados. The tournament has been spiced up by the entry of just three teams since its debut in 2022. Jamaica Empress will now have additional matches in the tour and this will give talented women cricketers in the Caribbean more opportunities.
WCPL Expands to Four Teams
The Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders join Jamaica Empress in the revamped tournament. It is a sign of the increasing popularity of women’s cricket in the region and shows organizers are committed to growing it.
The competition format has been revamped too, with four teams now taking part. In the round-robin stage, each team plays against all three other teams once. The top-ranked team that ends up with the best record will get an automatic spot in the final.
And the second and third-placed teams will contest a playoff, with the victor going through to the final of the championship.
Barbados Royals Chase Fourth Straight Title
The tournament will be led by the defending champions Barbados Royals, who have been overhauling the competition in recent times. The franchise has currently won the last three WCPL titles, achieving a remarkable hat-trick in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
They have consistently been a team in the tournament to set as the benchmark. Therefore, everyone from around the league will have their eye on the Royals as they seek to win four titles in a row come 2026.
Trinbago Knight Riders were the first WCPL winners, before Barbados Royals put their foot on the gas in 2023. The team will be keen to take the championship back and bring an end to the Royals’ reign as champions.

Bigger Plans for WCPL in the Future
Shakera Selman claims that the Women’s Caribbean Premier League is, for now, expanding from two to four teams. Event organisers have teased ambitious vision for 2027 and beyond.
The league is looking into inviting teams from outside the Caribbean, according to an official WCPL statement. That would turn the competition into a real global women’s T20 tournament and could bring in big international names, sponsorships and global audience.
The participation of overseas teams, especially, would be a major boost for women’s franchise cricket as it would also go a long way in fortifying the stature of WCPL on an international platform.
A New Chapter for Women’s Cricket
The Women’s Caribbean Premier League has a new name, Jamaica Empress The tournament itself has grown in prestige, with more teams than ever and a new format while expansion is high on the agenda.
The stage is set for 2026 as a new generation of competitive matches usher in an exciting depth of talent and another duel to claim the WCPL crown.
